I was struck saddened to know that our friend and neighbour Paul Thompson passed away a few days ago.

Paul is a very kind neighbour. Together with his wife Amanda and children they are open to us and help us on everything that newcomers need. Paul took me to car dealers and advised me on the purchasing of our first left hand driving car. Paul signed papers showing to local authorities that he knew us to help us on different integration procedures to this country. Amanda never forgets to share us the fresh pears from their garden every year.

Not only on everyday life stuff, Paul did involve me to different political activities of the Labour party. Paul is a keen Labour member and social activist. He took me with him in different campaigns. He invited me to political talks, to street manifestations, to discussions with Member of Parliament. And between the times, he took me to bars, to English pubs. We crawled from the Fountain Inn to the Robert Rake...there is hardly any corner of this Gloucester that we did not venture in together.

We shared lots of things and discussed a lot. Paul is a real socialist of the very meaning of this word. Once we wandered in the city centre a cold wet winter night and we saw people rough sleeping in the streets, Paul told me that he felt ashamed that we still have people that still such suffer in this fifth economy of the world.

Although myself a rather pursuer of some self-reliant ideology (if I can say) where people need to strive and help ourselves out of atrocities, I learnt a lot from Paul and respect deeply his engagement to make life better for the people whether he knows them or not. With Paul I felt that life is not only of and for the strong people that can decide them own, but life is also of the people who are poor, abandoned, accidented, of ones that even struggling hard cannot help themselves out. It is also what I learnt from Les Misérables of Victor Hugo, Oliver Twist of Charles Dickens and from the root of our Vietnamese culture where poor people help even poorer ones (La lanh dum la rach).

I took always a bottle of French wine to Paul’s whenever I travelled back from France and shared it with him while enjoying some good foods prepared by Amanda.

Not any more this time. Paul is going away. As he has told me a few years ago speaking about his Dad’s passing away, Paul is now wandering in and above the faraway Norwegian forest, with his Dad, undoubtedly.

I am lucky having Paul as neighbour and proud having you as friend. Rest in Peace, Paul.
