Nearly every morning on my way to work and out of the train station, I drop into whether Sainsbury or Tesco to pick a Viennoiserie, as called by French for a pain au chocolat or a croissant. Having these while sipping coffee or a hot chocolate in the morning is one of the best joys that I still keep while not any more in France.

The Viennoiserie costs me 85p exactly wherever I buy it. It is around 25 thousands Vietnam Dong which is also the price of a bowl of bun or hu tieu that I got from Bac Ba, the small homemade restaurant just in front of where we live in Quan 8, Sai Gon. 25 thousands VND for a bowl of something as breakfast is the best price we can have in Sai Gon today for a meal. The bowl is quite decent with enough bun or pho or hu tieu to keep you up all morning, together with some thin slices of beef or pieces of pork. Of course we cannot expect the world for less than one USD. Bac Ba also provides a decent amount of vegetables.

Bac Ba is both a special and normal Vietnamese woman. She is now nearly 80 years old or even more but still works very hard to provide food for herself and for her grandchildren and even her children who are workers in some factory or drive xe om in the city. They all struggle very hard to find a living, of course just shy of enough.

Bac Ba gets up at 3 in the morning when it is still dark and the alley is deserted. I know that because sometimes I was woken up by my Mother very early also to go with her to the Tet market or to accompany her to the morning exercise session.

Bac Ba prepares evrythings to make her restaurant ready at around 5 or 6 where the neighbors have another choice for breakfast. I sometimes after nights of drinking and wandering out, come home at 5 in the morning and enjoy her bowl. It is then as refreshing as a spirit drink in the morning after a long night...We call it giai nghe or lay ngot in Vietnamese.

She works until noon, goes to the market afterwards to buy stuff for the day after. She works all day, every day of the year. Every time I come back to Vietnam I can see that she is smaller, her back is coming lower, and she is still working to feed herself and her family. Her husband, Bac Ba trai, passed away a few years ago.

Bac Ba is from the Center of Vietnam. She gradually became one of the best neighbors and friends of my parents. She knows my Mother, speaks to my Mother even more than me. For which I am deeply grateful.

Don't know why on this day of Valentine that I think suddenly about Bac Ba. I wish Bac Ba all the best and health and happiness that you so deserve.

And Happy Valentine's Day also to all my friends. Don't stay out too late, there  is someone waiting for you at home.

PS: Some photos of an art gallery on my way to work.
